Airbnb No-Smoking Policy: Rules and Message Templates

A clear Airbnb no-smoking policy says exactly where smoking is not allowed and how the rule applies to vaping and other smoking products. “No smoking” alone can leave guests unsure about a balcony, garden, shared entrance, or driveway.

A clear Airbnb no-smoking policy says exactly where smoking is not allowed and how the rule applies to vaping and other smoking products. “No smoking” alone can leave guests unsure about a balcony, garden, shared entrance, or driveway.

Set the arrangement accurately in the listing before booking, then repeat it briefly in the home guide. A sign inside the property should remind guests of an existing rule, not introduce a new restriction after arrival.

A no-smoking rule template

No smoking or vaping in [specific areas].
This includes [products covered by the disclosed rule]. [If a permitted area genuinely exists: Smoking is permitted only in [exact location], subject to the applicable property and local restrictions.] Please keep [relevant entry or shared area] clear and dispose of any permitted smoking waste using [verified arrangement]. If you are unsure whether an area is covered, message us before using it.

Remove the permitted-area sentence if smoking is not allowed anywhere on the property. Do not leave contradictory wording such as “No smoking anywhere” followed by directions to a smoking terrace.

Answer the balcony and outdoor-space question

State whether balconies, patios, gardens, and shared access areas are included. Describe the actual boundary rather than using “outside” as if it meant the same thing at every rental.

For a shared building, check the building's current arrangements and applicable local restrictions. Do not send guests to a neighbouring frontage or public area without verifying that your suggestion is appropriate.

Airbnb's guest ground rules say guests should respect no-smoking rules and ask when the limits are unclear. They explicitly include tobacco, cannabis, and e-cigarettes in the smoking discussion. Your property wording should make its scope understandable.

A short reminder sign

Thank you for keeping this home smoke-free.
No smoking or vaping in [areas already disclosed].
[Accurate permitted-area note, if relevant.]
Questions? Please message [host/method].

Use one readable sign in the relevant place. Keep the text consistent with the listing and guide. A prominent pictogram can help recognition, but include words so guests understand the location and scope.

A neutral message when there is a concern

Hi [first name], we have received a report of [specific observation] in [area]. Our disclosed rule is [exact rule]. Could you please [specific requested action]? If there is something I should understand about what happened, please let me know here. Thank you for helping us maintain the home's arrangements.

Distinguish a report from something you verified yourself. Avoid guessing which person was responsible or treating an odour as proof of a particular cause. Keep relevant communication in the booking conversation.

Document facts without promising an automatic charge

If there is damage or an unusual cleaning issue, record what was observed, when, and what work was necessary. Use the relevant current platform process with appropriate supporting information. A sentence in a sign does not by itself establish that a fixed penalty will be collected.

This template does not set a standard smoking fee, determine liability, or promise that a review will be removed. Handle the actual issue separately from review requests and explain the next step calmly.

Keep the rule aligned across documents

  1. Check the listing's smoking and vaping settings and written rule.
  2. Check the welcome book's description of indoor and outdoor areas.
  3. Replace outdated reminder cards.
  4. Give the co-host and cleaner the same current instructions.
  5. Update all versions when a building or property arrangement changes.

The house-rules guide covers the wider list, while our quiet-hours templates offer another example of stating a clear boundary. For an active dispute, use the guest-issue response process.
