An Airbnb late checkout request should end with a clear answer and an exact departure time. Check the next arrival, cleaning schedule, and access arrangements before confirming. “It should be fine” can leave the guest and cleaner following different plans.
Airbnb's late-checkout guidance tells guests to ask the host and explain when they want to leave. An extension may be possible, but it is not automatic. This guide gives hosts a practical decision process and messages for the common outcomes.
Work backward from the next check-in
Start with the next guest's confirmed arrival time. Allow for cleaning, laundry, restocking, inspection, and a realistic margin for problems. Then ask whether the cleaner can actually change their visit.
- Is there a same-day arrival or an approved early check-in?
- Does laundry need to leave the property?
- Are maintenance or deliveries already booked?
- Can parking, shared building access, and the door code be extended?
- Who will communicate the confirmed change to everyone involved?
A gap in the calendar may help, but it does not answer all these questions. Use your turnover checklist to protect the preparation time you genuinely need.
Message template: approve the request
Hi [first name], we can confirm checkout by [time] on [date]. Please follow the usual checkout steps in [guide location]. Your access will remain available until [agreed time]. [Any fee already explained and agreed through the appropriate booking process.] Have a relaxed final morning.
State the date and time even if the conversation seems obvious. Confirm the code settings and notify the cleaner; a message alone does not change an automated lock schedule.
Message template: decline without a long explanation
Hi [first name], we cannot extend checkout for this stay because the home needs to be prepared for the next arrival. Please leave by [confirmed time]. If helpful, [verified luggage-storage option or local place] may suit your plans afterward. Thank you for understanding.
Only offer an alternative you have checked. A café is not automatically somewhere guests may leave bags, and your cleaner is not automatically available to supervise luggage.
Message template: a decision is still pending
Hi [first name], I am checking whether we can accommodate [requested time]. I will confirm by [realistic decision time]. Until then, please plan for the reservation's checkout time of [time].
Give the guest time to make another plan. If you cannot provide a useful answer before they need to decide, say that directly rather than repeatedly postponing the update.
Keep an optional fee clear
Airbnb notes that a host may charge for an agreed extension. Explain the proposed arrangement and any applicable cost before the guest accepts it, following the current platform process. Do not treat an unapproved overstay as though it were an optional service the guest bought.
This article does not set a universal fee or penalty. If someone remains past the agreed departure, document the facts in the booking conversation and use the relevant platform support process when needed.
Separate bag storage from staying longer
Sometimes a guest only needs somewhere to leave a suitcase. Confirm the storage location, collection deadline, and whether home access ends at the normal checkout time. Our luggage-storage guide includes a separate confirmation template.
What belongs in the reusable guest guide?
Include the normal checkout time, short departure steps, and how to request an exception. Keep reservation-specific approvals in the booking conversation. Link guests to your checkout instructions so an extension does not create confusion about keys or locking up.
Make departure arrangements easy to follow. The Check-in Guide puts your normal checkout details and home information in one guest-ready welcome book.
